Unwins has introduced two easy-to-grow varieties to its seed collection: Onion (Spring) Marksman and Spinach Nevada.
Onions are particularly easy to grow from seed and the new Onion (Spring) Marksman is a hardy, UK-bred variety has been designed for versatility and ease of growth. This robust spring onion boasts a long cropping period, allowing gardeners to harvest fresh, flavourful onions from spring through autumn. Perfect for year-round use, the Onion (Spring) Marksman offers a crisp, delicious taste that enhances a variety of dishes. Its thin skin makes it easy to peel, while its strong rooting system promotes sturdy, upright stems, that reduce the risk of disease. For continuous harvests throughout the summer, gardeners can sow little and often from March onwards, directly into pre-watered, shallow drills.

The new Spinach Nevada variety is as nutritious as it is fast-growing. With a long harvesting window that spans from early spring through late autumn, Spinach Nevada produces smooth, thick leaves that are not only easy to harvest but also boast excellent shelf life. This upright variety is particularly resistant to downy mildew, a common challenge for spinach crops, ensuring higher-quality harvests throughout the season.
Both Onion (Spring) Marksman and Spinach Nevada are well-suited for container gardening, making them ideal for small spaces like balconies or patios. For those with larger gardens or allotments, planting these alongside tall crops like sweetcorn or runner beans can provide essential shade during the hot summer months, promoting healthy growth.
Natasha Lane, Technical Manager, Unwins, commented: “We’re thrilled to offer gardeners two new, exciting varieties that are not only easy to grow but also provide a bountiful, delicious harvest. Whether in a small space or a large plot, Onion (Spring) Marksman and Spinach Nevada are set to bring convenience and flavour to kitchens.”
