Barton Grange Garden Centre to be bought by Blue Diamond

The fabulous Barton Grange garden centre, located on Garston Road in Preston, is to be bought by Blue Diamond group.

Established by horticulturalist Edward and his wife Ada Topping in 1951 and run as a family business for the past 61 years, present owners Guy and Peter Topping said they had reached the “very difficult decision” to sell because their children wanted to “focus on a new paths outside horticulture”.

The Topping brothers also own Barton Grange Marina and the Flower Bowl Entertainment Centre that are adjacent to the garden centre and nursery complex but will not be included in the sale.

Speaking to the BBC about the sale, Guy said he had enjoyed every minute of his time and commented: “I’ve been very lucky to have a career in garden centres, and there are lots of very down to earth good people in the trade.

“But it became very apparent 18 months ago that none of Peter’s or my children want to pursue a career in horticultural or retail. It was the end of the line for the Topping family in the horticultural industry.”

Barton Grange has operated from its present site since 2008, which will bring the Blue Diamond portfolio up to 50 sites around the UK. An official statement signed by Peter and Guy stated:

With the next generation focusing on new paths outside of horticulture, and both Peter and Guy ready to slow things down, we felt now was the time to make a change. Several of the younger members of the family are passionate about the leisure industry, so we’ll be keeping The Flower Bowl, the Marina, and most of the site at Brock.

“We’ve always been impressed with Blue Diamond, and we feel confident they’re the right team to take the Garden Centre and nursery forward. They share our values and passion for the industry, and we’re sure they’ll continue to build on what we’ve created here.

“The hardest part of this decision is saying goodbye to the people; our team and of course the wonderful customers who’ve supported us through the years. Your loyalty and enthusiasm have meant the world to us, and we’re incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved together. Thank you for being part of our story.”

In February this year Barton Grange was named Destination Garden Centre of the Year in the UK at the GCA awards.

On Thursday 26th June Guy Topping and Alan Roper exchanged friendly banter at the Greenfingers Charity Floral Ball, the garden industry’s chosen charity, which raises much needed funds to establish gardens in children’s hospices. Guy was responsible for running the auction and ensured all those present, Alan included, dug deep into their pockets and helped to raise over £40,000 on the night.
