Avian Guard: an intelligent approach to cleaner feeding

Following its recent UK launch, Whistler is turning the spotlight on its new Signature Feeders, a premium collection designed to address one of the most important considerations in wild bird care: feeding hygiene.

Featuring Whistler’s Avian Guard anti-microbial coating, the Signature Seed Feeder and Signature Suet Ball Feeder have been developed to support cleaner feeding, easier maintenance and long-term durability, whilst offering retailers a compelling combination of product innovation, practicality and commercial opportunity.

As awareness of good bird feeding hygiene continues to grow, Whistler believes there is an opportunity for retailers to move the conversation beyond simply providing food and towards the importance of how that food is presented, protected and maintained.

At the heart of the collection is Avian Guard, an antimicrobial coating designed to help inhibit bacterial growth on feeder surfaces.

Recent independent laboratory testing on Whistler Signature Feeders with Avian Guard, demonstrated a greater than 99.99% reduction in three tested bacteria – E. coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus – after 24 hours under test conditions.

The findings are particularly relevant given the growing focus on wild bird health and feeding hygiene. The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) identifies Colibacillosis, a disease caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonellosis*, a disease caused by Salmonella bacteria, as prominent bacterial diseases affecting garden birds, reinforcing the need for responsible feeding practices.

For retailers, Avian Guard provides a scientifically supported point of differentiation, offering customers an additional hygiene-focused feature that complements, rather than replaces, regular feeder cleaning.

Beyond Avian Guard, both feeders feature a convenient twist-off lid for quick refilling and cleaning, alongside premium steel construction designed to withstand year-round outdoor use.

Signature Seed Feeder – RRP £8.99: Premium steel construction with Avian Guard coating and twist-off lid.
Signature Suet Ball Feeder – RRP £8.99: Durable all-season design featuring the same anti-microbial technology and easy-access lid.

Together, they offer consumers an accessible way to upgrade their feeding equipment, combining premium features with everyday practicality.

Launched alongside Whistler’s Signature Seed Blend and Signature Suet Balls, the feeders form part of a coordinated bird care proposition, creating natural opportunities for linked purchases and encouraging consumers to consider the complete feeding experience.

Whistler’s Paul Barker explains: “Consumers quite rightly focus on the quality of the food they offer garden birds, but the feeder itself is equally important. With Avian Guard, we’ve introduced a meaningful feature that helps address feeding hygiene, whilst ensuring our products remain practical, durable and straightforward to maintain.

“For retailers, this creates a genuine conversation starter. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate added value, encourage customers to trade up and build linked sales across seed, suet and feeding hardware.

“That’s what Whistler is all about. Bringing thoughtful innovation and genuine points of difference to established categories, whilst helping retailers build stronger, more profitable wild bird care sales.”
